Recycling levels have quadrupled since 1996 and over a quarter of all household waste is now composted or recycled.

August 1, 2007 (FPRC) -- Over 100 million tonnes of household waste are generated each year and the government's latest Waste Strategy Document released by DEFRA ( Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) outlines the governments new key targets and how it aims to achieve them. The new targets include decoupling waste growth from economic growth by promoting waste prevention and re-use, reducing landfill, securing new investment for waste infrastructure and reducing greenhouse gases from waste management by at least 9.3 millions tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
The level of non-recycled household waste in 2000 was 22 million tonnes per year and the new strategy aims to reduce this to 15 million tonnes by 2010 and 12.2 million tonnes by 2020.
From these high level targets a number of lower level effects are starting to be seen. Skip Hire companies are facing more stringent targets and legislation in the way they collect and dispose of waste, municipal waste sites are more strictly controlled and targetted and local councils are asking for the ban on financial incentives for household waste production and recycling to be removed.
Other areas that face increasing scrutiny include better food packaging, tighter control of commercial waste, more use of recycled paper, new packaging materials development, fewer single-use shopping bags and an opt-out for unaddressed mail.
With correct investment and suitable infrastructure in place, many of these targets are easily achievable with a combination of regulation and incentive driven proposals.
For example if a market for wood waste were to be developed, then just a third of the wood waste that currently goes to landfill could generate 2600 GWh of electricity.
