January 24, 2009 (FPRC) -- WILDWOOD, NJ -- One of the classic New Jersey attractions, the Golden Nugget, is being removed and the Morey's Piers team is preparing a farewell ceremony. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, January 31st at noon on the Hunt's Pier and is open to the public.

A limited edition souvenir will be given out to those attending the farewell ceremony to celebrate the attraction's 34 years of operation. Refreshments will also be served and the ceremony includes presentations by Will and Jack Morey, as well as other industry leaders.

"Over 1,700,000 people have ridden the Golden Nugget, so we knew we wanted to do something special to memorialize the attraction before it was removed. The train and the tracks have been removed for use in another attraction, but there will never be another ride with the history of the Golden Nugget. For 34 years, the Golden Nugget has been one of the nostalgic New Jersey attractions and it's something that will be sorely missed," said Jack Morey of Morey's Piers (http://www.moreyspiers.com/).

The attraction opened in August 1960, though it was unfinished due to weather conditions in the winter of 1959. The ride initially had ten single mine cars for patrons to ride in, but after 1961 the cars were joined into five, two car trains. The Golden Nugget underwent many improvements over the years, including a roof over the porch in the fall of 1979 and a new dinosaur theme in 1996. It was then that the attraction was renamed the Golden Nugget Mine Rescue.

John C. Allen was the Golden Nugget's designer and many of the props were made locally by Bill Tracy's Amusement Displays. Other companies that made props were Unique Designs and Funni Frite Industries.

"We hope the public comes out and joins us in saying goodbye to the Golden Nugget. The ride has helped create so many fun memories. We're sad to see it go, but know that the useable pieces of the ride are going to capable hands. We're hoping to replace it with other New Jersey attractions in honor of the Golden Nugget that will provide just as many memories for our guests," said Jack Morey.
