May 2009 - First Capital Connect (FCC) has provided its customers with a new way to access important travel information, using the fast-growing microblogging site Twitter.

When rail commuters follow First Capital Connect on Twitter (@FirstCC), they will be asked for some simple information about their regular commute – the stations they travel between and the times of day when their journeys typically take place.

The system will then continually monitor the status of the rail network, alerting customers only when problems occur that will affect their journeys. And due to the mobile-friendly nature of Twitter, customers will be able to receive these alerts even if they're already on the move.

The new Twitter service was developed after FCC, alongside digital agency Tobias & Tobias, realised Twitter's potential as a way of getting information to passengers in real time..

Katey Burton, FCC's E-Marketing Manager, explains: "When Twitter's popularity in the UK started to grow, we decided it could help us provide our customers with relevant, timely information to help make their journeys easier during times of disruption. We believe the service is a first for a rail operator and will really help and inform customers both now and in the future as Twitter develops."

Brendan Nelson, head of strategy at Tobias & Tobias, said, "While many companies are still considering how to incorporate Twitter into their digital communications mix, FCC has taken a bold step forward. Their customers now enjoy a greater choice of ways in which to interact with their rail provider, and the freedom to do so even when they're many miles from their computer."

Customers can start using the service simply by following the FCC Twitter account at http://twitter.com/FirstCC.
