A Steamy Taxi Cartoon Book
A new and very funny book about Las Vegas taxis
July 30, 2009 (FPRC) -- A riot of a humor book from cartoonist Steamy Raimon hits the shelves this week. Well, not really. Steamy Raimon’s first solo offering, “A Very Steamy Taxi Cartoon Book” is a compilation of cartoons from his “Smiles for Miles”, and “Red Light-Green Light” cartoon strips. Steamy was the humor voice of the Las Vegas public transportation industry from years 2002 to 2007; with his work appearing monthly within the pages of Tripsheet, and Taxi & Limo Drivers’ Guide (magazines dedicated to covering the goings-on of the taxicab and limousine drivers and companies of Las Vegas, Nevada). Now, for the first time, the entire run of these cartoons is presented to the general public, together, and in one paperback by Turtle Love Press.
Steamy first developed Red Light-Green Light. It appeared in Taxi & Limo Drivers’ Guide. Red Light-Green Light is a multi-panel, multi-cultural strip with six contiguous characters. It is a strip filled with major laughs and quality art. Artwork has been upgraded and reformatted for this first edition. Smiles For Miles was published as a single-panel, non-recurring feature in Tripsheet. Sure, there are many “inside” jokes throughout this book, but any reader is guaranteed page-after-page of surprises and enjoyment. Even people who never hailed a taxi or reserved a limo, or ever stepped foot in Sin City will love this book.
Steamy lived and worked in Las Vegas from years 2001-2006 and returned for a while in 2008. He knows Las Vegas. He knows the city, the casinos, the shows, the visitors, the locals, and most of all the taxi and limo drivers. That familiarity, matched with Steamy’s twisted sense of humor and talented hand, spawned an incredible body of material. It seemed inevitable that his ideas would be regenerated into a humor book.
A Very Steamy Taxi Cartoon Book is part of the popular POD (Print On Demand) movement. Using services provided by POD companies, many writers and artists today are making their work available to a growing online consumer base. Books produced this way tend to cost more than traditional methods. Even so, POD books are attractive to new talents for several reasons. While POD books don’t get the brick and mortar shelf space of standard books from the likes of Random House, Penguin, HarperCollins, etc, they provide the following advantages: 1) total freedom to share creative work with the public in exactly the format he or she wishes (no editorial interference, unnecessary requirements, or second opinions), 2) a much shorter time frame to produce a book from start to finish, 3) material can be uploaded and the book made available simply at the push of a few buttons, 4) a free storefront, 5) a plethora of online support groups and potential friends with similar interests, 6) books produced one-at-a-time or in endless quantity, 7) easy and secure online purchase and delivery systems, 8) it’s GREEN. No longer is there a need to mass-produce paper editions that compete with each other for shelf space, with many unwanted copies winding up in the discount bin, or worse, going unsold and returned to publishers. Now, books are produced according to actual purchases and can even be had in paperless e-versions. That makes trees happy. When trees are happy, we’re all happy.
