Venture Process Engineering News – Fairmont Brine Processing, Frac Water Treatment Without Deep Well Injection
While other facilities can do pretreatment, concentration, and deep well injection, Fairmont Brine Processing is the only full flowback and produced water solution that requires no deep well injection or recycling of brine to customers, to operate.
October 8, 2013 (FPRC) -- The management of Frac water from development of Marcellus shale wells has been subject to increasing scrutiny. The deeper Utica shale formation is as promising as the Marcellus formation, and will probably have similar management issues. Concerns about frac water include:
Nature of constituents added for fracing
Salinity of the frac water and impact of uncontrolled disposal on local waterways
Concerns about radioactivity still exist (but may be moot)
The initial flowback becomes increasingly saline over time, and the produced water generated over the long term is heavy brine. Produced water salt content can exceed that of Dead Sea brine.
Management of flow back and produced water has progressed from direct discharge, or dilution and discharge via sewage treatment plants. Current practices involve:
Various treatment methods to remove barium and other metals
Evaporation to reduce volume
Recipes for frac water that allow use of increasingly saline solutions
Disclosure of frac water formulations used by the drillers and service providers
Moving around produced water enough to avoid regulation as a residual waste and landfilling the residual sludge
The crystallization and evaporation process offered by Venture’s Fairmont Brine division is an environmentally friendly alternative for the oil and gas industry that eliminates the risks associated with deep well injection along with the rising disposal costs. Brine, flowback and produced fluid from the hydraulic-fracturing process contain naturally occurring subsurface salts and other minerals. This process is similar to how much of the domestic salt is produced in this country through solution mining. However, the hydraulic-fracturing process includes sand and other additives, which must be removed upon flowing back to the earth's surface in order to recycle and reuse the fluid in future operations.
Fairmont Brine Processing operates a two phase process, with the first being a 15,000 bbl/day recycle for reuse process in order to remove total suspended solids, barium, other organics, and pH control as well. Treated brine is now produced and available for future operations. The second part of the process is a 5,000 bbl/day evaporation and crystallization process. By recycling and reusing this fluid, the ecological demand is lessened on municipal water sources and primary and secondary roadways.
