July 28, 2014 (FPRC) -- As August is Cataract Awareness Month Seeta Eye Centers urges seniors and their caregivers to be aware of the need for regular eye exams and especially not to ignore the symptoms of cataracts or vision loss as delaying diagnosis and treatment of age-related cataracts can increase seniors' risk of both physical and psychological damage.

'As an eye surgeon performing laser cataract surgery and lens implants it is easy to measure the impact and success of what we do based solely on surgical outcomes,' said Satish Modi, M.D.

'But in reality, what we have seen and what is now recognized by ophthalmologists and social scientists is that cataract surgery provides a meaningful gain in quality-of-life. Without cataract surgery, cataract-related vision loss can become so bad that seniors lose their independence in a variety of ways, such as being able to drive, read their mail, keep up their home and administer their medications,' said Dr. Modi.

Cataract surgeons from Seeta Eye Centers further commented on the numerous studies highlighting the contribution of better vision after cataract surgery to the quality of life for Hudson Valley seniors. 'We are now well aware of how vision loss among seniors can lead to social isolation, depression, mental decline and even increases the risk of falls with associated orthopedic injury such as hip fracture,' noted Andreas Wolter, M.D. 'Further, we know that cataract surgery not only improves the quality of life, but patients having cataract surgery actually live longer,' stressed Dr. Wolter. 'After performing cataract surgery for Hudson Valley seniors for more than 30 years, I have personally seen the positive social aspects, family dynamics and just life quality we are able to bring to patients with cataracts,' shared Dr. Modi.
