May 13, 2015 (FPRC) --
Announced by George Osbourne in his Autumn Statement, and applicable as of 1st May 2015, family holidays will become a lot more affordable now that Air Passenger Duty (APD) airport departure tax has been shelved for the under 12’s.
Families that have already booked their holidays with flights scheduled to fly out from this date onwards will also be eligible to reclaim back the tax they paid for their children’s tickets. The amount they receive will depend on when the flight was booked and the chosen destination.
“The dismissal of air passenger duty on children’s tickets is great news for families,” says Laura Maddison, Head of Marketing at Avanti Travel Insurance. “Historically, children have always paid the same APD tax as adults, and fees haves been gradually increasing since the tax was first introduced 20 years ago, resulting in higher costs for parents who wanted to enjoy a break abroad. Flying is now much more affordable, making regular trips away more feasible for those on a budget.”
But, as Laura explains, it’s vital that families take the necessary steps to reclaim their tax.
“With the exception of Easy Jet, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways, many airlines will not be refunding the tax automatically, therefore it is vital that you do not leave the money you are owed unclaimed. Most companies will expect you to apply online and provide proof of your child’s age.”
Although this recent reform is currently only applicable to those travelling with under-12’s and seats booked in economy class, as of March 2016 the abolition of tax will be extended to all children under the age of 16.
